New World’s Tom Van Doren Interviews alongside JHU/APL for NPR
June 29, 2007
Fredericksburg, VA - On June 6th New World’s Dr. Tom Van Doren, lead engineer for development of the Prototype 2 limb on the Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program, was interviewed by National Public Radio’s Rebecca Roberts for its program, “All Things Considered.” New World is a member of the international team assembled by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) to develop the world’s most advanced prosthetic arm under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program. New World engineers are developing system designs and innovative mechanical components to meet challenging weight, performance, and power requirements of this program.
The NPR interview discussed the on-going Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program’s objective to advance the design of prosthetic arms. This effort is for the benefit of our returning soldiers and aims to develop an arm that will mimic the movement of a natural limb and allow the amputee to have a sense of touch, temperature, and spatial location. The goals of the program are to design a prosthetic arm that is about 7 pounds, has 27 degrees of freedom, lifts 50 pounds, types on a keyboard, and is FDA approved. This revolutionary prosthetic arm will ultimately be neurally controlled by the amputee. This program is expected to be completed in 2009.
