New World Engineers Show Dedication, Get Mention in WIRED Magazine
September 14, 2007
Fredericksburg, VA - WIRED Magazine’s freelance writer Michael Belfiore uncovered the heart of the engineering team while researching for his article, “The World’s Most Advanced Bionic Arm,” published online 7 August 2007. Invited to observe the engineering process from a completely open access, behind-the-scenes perspective at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), Belfiore witnessed the kind of detailed and dedicated work that makes the results of JHU/APL’s led Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program (RPP) particularly remarkable.
Just another day on the job; New World’s Chad Dize, Ezra Johnson and Tom Van Doren, with Eric Faulring of Chicago PT were alongside other RPP team engineers working toward the goals of the RPP. Today, these engineers ‘get mention’ for working attentively on the extrinsic hand – a key component of the prosthetic arm. For these engineers, creating revolutionary new devices that help to improve lives is as exciting as it is heartfelt. For over 18 months they have been creating new technology for prosthetic limbs, for the benefit of returning soldiers. Ultimately, the prosthetic arms will be neurally controlled by the amputee and will imitate a human arm almost perfectly in terms of size, weight and appearance.
The Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
