The U.S. Navy CBR Filter System is the backbone of the ship Collective Protection System (CPS) for new construction and backfit installations. These filter systems hold from one (1) to eighty (80) CBR filters for capacities of 200 to 16000 cfm. The U.S. Navy filter system is constructed of corrosion resistant materials and is qualified to ship shock and vibration requirements.
This system is used in shipboard or in land-based installations due to its proven performance and established logistics support.
A fully functional CBR Filter System includes the filter system described in this section along with CBR filters and Prefilters.
To determine filter system size, use the following info based on your flow rate required and available dimensional constraints. Housings are available in 5 lengths. Choosing the longest length that meets your dimensional constraint will provide the lowest cost system.
Filter System Arrangement Filter System Dimension Flow Rate at 200 CFM Per Filter W x H W x H Depth (# of Filters) 1 2 3 4 5 1 x 1 36" x 36" 200 400 600 800 1000 1 x 2 36" x 63" 400 800 1200 1600 2000 1 x 3 36" x 90" 600 1200 1800 2400 3000 1 x 4 36" x 117" 800 1600 2400 3200 4000 2 x 1 63" x 36" 400 800 1200 1600 2000 2 x 2 63" x 63" 800 1600 2400 3200 4000 2 x 3 63" x 90" 1200 2400 3600 4800 6000 2 x 4 63" x 117" 1600 3200 4800 6400 8000 3 x 1 90" x 36" 600 1200 1800 2400 3000 3 x 2 90" x 63" 1200 2400 3600 4800 6000 3 x 3 90" x 90" 1800 3600 5400 7200 9000 3 x 4 90" x 117" 2400 4800 7200 9600 12000 4 x 1 117" x 36" 800 1600 2400 3200 4000 4 x 2 117" x 63" 1600 3200 4800 6400 8000 4 x 3 117" x 90" 2400 4800 7200 9600 12000 4 x 4 117" x 117" 3200 6400 9600 12800 16000

The NBC filter removes solid, aerosol, and gaseous NBC contamination using a two filter elements: an inner high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter and an outer gas adsorber as shown above. Each NBC filter has a rated flow capacity of 200 cfm (5.7 m3/min). It is manufactured in accordance with U.S. military specification MIL-F-51527.
The HEPA filter is the "first-stage" filter element of the NBC filter. Air passes first through the HEPA filter where solid particles (e.g., dust and dirt) are removed from the airstream, including biological aerosols and radioactive particles. The HEPA filter uses a high-efficiency pleated filter media approved for shipboard use. The HEPA filter has a rated efficiency of 99.97% at 0.3 microns.
The HEPA filter has an initial (clean) flow resistance (pressure drop) of approximately 0.7 in. wg (174 Pa). During operation, dust collected by the HEPA filter creates additional restriction but does not degrade the collection efficiency. The HEPA filter weighs approximately 10 lbs (4.5 kg).
The gas adsorber is the "second-stage" filter element of the NBC filter. As air passes through the gas adsorber, chemical warfare gases are removed through physical and chemical adsorption using a packed bed of granular carbon. This carbon bed has additional treatments for enhanced performance against certain gases and in presence of high relative humidity.
The gas adsorber has a flow resistance (pressure drop) of approximately 3.5 in. wg (872 Pa). During operation, the flow resistance of the gas adsorber does not increase. However, its weight will increase as water vapor is adsorbed. The initial (dry) weight of the gas adsorber is approximately 35 lbs (16.0 kg).
